Xilingol.

  • Origins: Mongolia. Developed from the Chinese mongolian, Russian thoroughbred and Akhal-teke in the 1960s.
  • Height:  Around 15.2 hh (155cms)
  • Colour:  All solid colours.
  • Features:  A purpose bred light horse for riding and draft.

 

 

Breeds – Y

 

Yakut.

 
  • Origins: Siberia (Russia)
  • Height:  13.3 – 14 hh (137 – 141cms)
  • Colour:  Bay, Grey, Grey/Brown and Roan
  • Features:  Extremely hardy draft breed now also used for milk production.
 

 

 

 

 

Yonaguni.

 
  • Origins: Native of the Southwest islands of Japan, possibly introduced from Korea and related to the Korean Cheju breed.
  • Height:  Around 14.2 hh (145cms)
  • Colour:  Usually chestnut.
  • Features:  At one time each island household would have owned one of these extremely tractable, strong little horses for general transport and fieldwork. Notable is the high set of the tail, which suggests that there is a heritage from the same bloodlines as the Arabian. These horses are now listed as rare and have become a cultural asset.

Zeeland

 
  • Origins:  Holland.  Goes back to the earliest times, and has been in great demand since the Middle Ages.
  • Height:  to 16.3 hh (168cms)
  • Colour:  Chestnut, Grey or Black
  • Features:  The main characteristics are the snub nosed head with straight profile, plenty of bone, excellent feet and god carriage.  Said to bear heat and cold, and to show great adaptability under all circumstances.

Zemaitukas

 

  • Origins:  A tough breed or ancient origin, indigenous to the grasslands of western Lithuania, descended from the Tartar pony of the Steppes and the Arab.
  • Height:  13 - 15 hh (130 – 150cms)
  • Colour:  Dun or brown
  • Features:  Renowned for its staying power and almost indestructible legs and feet, it can live as frugally as any horse to be found.

 

Zhemaichu

 

  • Origins: Lithuania
  • Height:  15 – 15.2 hh (152 – 154cms)
  • Colour:  Often chestnut
  • Features:  A strong, agile horse of strong deep body. A mixture of utility and sporthorse, which has seen the breed, take part in draft tests and steeplechases.
